LRWRA Women of Water Celebrates Diversity in STEM, Women’s History Month

Little Rock, AR (March 18, 2021) – In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Little Rock Water Reclamation Authority (LRWRA) spotlights Women of Water (WOW) with the theme HERstory: Celebrating Women’s History Month. For the third year, WOW seeks to increase awareness about gender diversity and the accomplishments of women in the water reclamation industry and other science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, as well as the daily contributions of women within their organization to maintain a thriving city. LRWRA will celebrate Raye Jean Montague Day and will host a virtual book reading for K-5 students and a virtual movie party with Little Rock School District (LRSD) 4th and 5th grade students.

“LRWRA is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month and recognizes the value our women employees bring to our utility and our ability to help the city flourish,” said Greg Ramon, LRWRA CEO. “I am honored to celebrate them, while also drawing attention to the need for more women in the traditionally male-dominated field. It’s important that our workforce more accurately reflects the Little Rock population, and I’m hopeful that as we continue to spotlight our WOW campaign, more young women will look at careers in the water reclamation industry.”

On Tuesday, March 23, Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. will again proclaim March 28 as Raye Jean Montague Day, and on the 28th at 2 p.m., LRWRA will co-host a virtual book reading, in partnership with Pyramid Art, Books and Custom Framing. Montague’s son, Dr. David Montague, will read “The Girl with a Mind for Math: The Story of Raye Montague.” The event is free and open to the public. RSVP is required and can be made here or by visiting pyramid1988.com. On Friday, April 2, LRSD 4th and 5th grade students will watch the critically acclaimed movie “Hidden Figures,” the story of three African-American NASA mathematicians who served as the brains behind the launch into orbit of astronaut John Glenn, a stunning achievement that turned around the space race. LRWRA also announced that it will host WOW Presents featuring Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, a National Institutes of Health scientist who was instrumental in the development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The event is scheduled for December 10.
